Veronica Perez Herrera
Growing up, Veronica Perez Herrera had a lot of challenges while pursuing a college degree. She was a minority, female, and first-generation college student that grew up in a low-income household. She didn’t have a lot of guidance from family or school, so it took a lot of self-motivation and persistence to be successful.
During her freshman year, she helped established a Women in STEM club in the new university. As the President of the club, she created an inclusive culture on campus that empowers and mentors female students. As a junior, she learned about SWE and attended her first WE conference in Philadelphia. The club decided to change the Women in STEM club to become a SWE Collegiate section.
Veronica knows the importance of mentoring, so she hosted several Lab Days at Florida Poly for low income students that encourage them to pursue a STEM degree. The students would participate in STEM activities that were run by college students and industry professionals, such as Rockwell Automation and Turner Construction. Hundreds of middle school students were able to participate in the Lab Days at Florida Poly.
Veronica was not only involved in SWE, she was also elected as the Student Body President for two terms at Florida Poly. She is a natural born leader that takes advantages of every opportunity that comes her way.
During her college years, she participated in countless volunteering events that helped her network and meet other industry professionals. Veronica was able to obtain five internships before graduation.
Veronica graduated from Florida Polytechnic University in May 2018 with a Mechanical Engineering degree. She is currently working as an Engineer with Rummel Klepper & Kahl (RK&K) in Lakeland, FL.
