April Mills, Engineer by Trade, Tireless Change Agent by Calling

In Ms. April Mills’ 20-year career, she has rebuilt diesel engines, maintained U.S. Navy nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers, launched a consulting practice and transformed a global tech giant’s approach to creating organizational change.

In 2016, April published her first book, Everyone is a Change Agent: A Guide to the Change Agent Essentials. Through her website and blog, www.engine-for-change.com, April shares her passion for creating positive change, outlining ways anyone can drive change for themselves, their organization and their community.

As a working mother of four young children, April has even found time to volunteer in her community. She was recognized as a YWCA Woman of Achievement for expanding community access to quality child care and, in 2014, she led Bremerton Beyond Accessible Play to open Kitsap County, Washington’s first beyond accessible playground for children and adults of all abilities.

Dorota Shortell, U.S. Patent Holder and one of Portland Business Journals’ 12 Portland-Area Executives to Watch in 2017

In 2010, Ms. Dorota Shortell took over for the founder of Simplexity Product Development after working in the company as a senior mechanical engineer, project manager and director of the Vancouver office. During Dorota’s tenure, Simplexity’s top-line revenue has more than quadrupled and the company has transitioned from 20 to over 70 employees.  In 2017, Simplexity was selected by Inc. Magazine as one of the Best Workplaces in America and by the San Diego Business Journal as one of the top 100 Fastest Growing Companies.

Dorota is a National Science Foundation fellow, Tau Beta Pi Fellow and Institute for the Advancement of Engineering Fellow.  In 2013, she was recognized by the Portland Business Journal as one of the region’s top business leaders as a Forty under 40 Award winner.

Dorota is a SWE life member and first joined the society in 1995 while still in college.
