More women are leaving engineering than men because they lack mentors in a male-dominated field. They also face gender bias, discrimination and subtle cues on a daily basis that their work is not as valuable as that of men. More women in engineering means more diversity, which is necessary to foster innovation and to bring in fresh perspectives. Their insights can improve designs of products with the specific needs and physicality of women and children in mind. Given that women world over are overwhelmingly involved in care and household activities, women engineers can weigh in with impactful solutions to pressing global challenges including climate change, access to clean fuels and water. Without women’s perspectives, the engineering field misses out on half of the world’s talent pool for creative solutions. One way to dismantle gender stereotypes and gender bias is by highlighting role models. Role models can build self-confidence and bolster the aspirations of women and girls to pursue a similar career path. In addition, women in engineering need a platform to connect with one another and to share experiences, advice and peer learning. Policy support is also crucial, and the Udaan scholarship by the Govt. of India to increase the enrolment of girls in engineering fields is one such example. Women also are far better placed to provide gender responsive insights to build sustainable, inclusive futures. Towards this, UNOPs and UN Women have developed guides on integrating gender into infrastructure development in Asia and the Pacific to to ensure that infrastructure is designed and built to maximize positive and equitable benefits – such as income- generating opportunities and access for all. Importantly, the guidelines emphasize the need to include women’s voices, including women engineers into the development of these projects, to create a paradigm shift in how we plan, deliver, and manage infrastructure that is in turn responsive to the needs of all stakeholders, including women, children, the disabled and marginalized members of society. Here we report a 3D printed, parallel plate membraneless electrolyzer cell with electrodes, electrolyte flow cell in an integrated monolithic setup providing high throughput green hydrogen in a scalable reactor geometry. The present work study fundamentals of water splitting reaction in acidic medium in parallel plate membrane-less electrolyzer cell. The products hydrogen and oxygen generated in cathode and anode achieve high purity gas separation because of the underlying hydrodynamics of the flowing electrolyte in the cell. The devices reported here achieve current density of 75 mA/cm2 to 150 mA/cm2 for 60% electrolysis efficiency with varying channel width from 13 mm to 4 mm.
